The location of a work of art is often very influential in determining both its formal characteristics and its content. Choose a work that we have studied in the Renaissance era (15th and 16 th C) and discuss the importance of its original location (not present location.) 2-3 paragraphs

Read pps 707-723 Northern Renaissance; Germany and France. Bring paper on Reformation to class to discuss.

For February 11th

Remember to come to 4th floor computer lab. Read section on the Protestant Reformation; consider the ways it influenced art and artists in the North. We wil continue our research on this subject in class.

For February 9th

Read about the Counter reformation and its impact on Mannerist artists, as well as the remainder of this chapter.
Write a half to full page paper about either Pontormo, Parmigianino or Bronzino and come to class prepared to discuss their works and the societal forces that formed the characteristics of this unusual style.

For February 5th

Using examples, discuss how High Renaissance art in Venice is different from High Renaissance art in Florence or Rome. You should compare examples from Venice to ones from Rome or Florence. The comparisons can include examples from painting, sculpture and/or architecture. One page

Explore the world of Leaonardo da Vinci. Bring in a unique fact about his life or work. Extra credit if no one else has the same fact.

For January 28th-Midterm

Do not spend time on Prehistory or Ancient Near East...and very little on Egypt. Do concentrate on Greece, Rome, Early Christian, Byzantine, Early Medieval, Gothic, 14th Century, and 15th Century North and Italy. Do not be worried about exact dates, but be able to distinguish between cultures. Think about the meanings of the artworks, uses and locations of the works,  societal influences, relationship to art before and after.
Study hard and have fun!

Humanism: what does this mean to artists of the 15th Century? Please take notes from the book including examples of specific works and artists. Bring these notes or a rough outline to class to complete a writing assignment on this topic.

Discuss Donatello's Equestrian Monument in relation to other equestrian sculptures we have seen in the course.  Consider placement purpose style and proportion. 1 page.
