Claude lorrain- Landscape with the Repentant Magdalene
This piece is very typical of French art. France being a predominantly Catholic state at the time had many religious references in the art. In this piece Mary Magdalene is depicted. Also typical to French art, she is a large-scale figure placed in the foreground. Tenebrism, is also greatly deployed in this painting but is not uniquely French. This piece is similar to other French pieces in the sense that the landscape that the religious figure is placed in is as if not more important than the religious figure itself. The landscape pieces also look very much like a stage. The figures and natural elements within this piece are organized into an ideal composition. This French style is different from Dutch work because it still has much to do with the Catholic religion. The French pieces are also less clustered with figures (more about the landscape then the figures). This French piece is unique to the rest of Europe because it is mainly about landscape, not about figures or religion.

Claude Lorrain is a perfect example of a French Classicist artist. In this painting, Apollo and Muses at Pernassus he incorporates Classic architecture and even sculpture, that can be seen in the top right corner. The colors are light and airy, although there is haziness about the scene. The subject is Classic, with the pagan sun deity, Apollo being depicted. In this way, Claude Lorrain establishes Classic influences in his painting.
