The term Romanesque means in the roman manner. This term applies to the art and architecture of Europe during the eleventh and twelfth century. Romanesque was a term used to describe European church architecture because they often imitated the solid masonry walls, rounded arches, and vaults characteristic of imperial roman buildings. Drying this time Europe became increasingly religious this intern lead to an increase of building and architectural methods because people wanted to glorify the “house of God” and the saints. One example of this is the church of Saint Vincent, Cardona. This church had a transept that had two apses and a low crossing tower that emphasized the importance of the choir, large apse, and alter. It followed the Benedictine Plan. It also had compound piers and transverse arches dividing the nave into a series of bays that clarify and define the space- this became an essential element in Romanesque architecture. Another example of Romanesque architecture is the Cathedral of Saint James in Santiago De Compostela. This church was also known as a “Pilgrimage Church”. In these churches, builders added to the ailed nave the aisled transepts with chapels leading to an ambulatory with additional radiating chapels around the apse. This system allowed worshippers to move around the church with more ease, and it was because of this that it became a classic architectural style of the Romanesque period. The Abbey Church of Saint Peter was also an example of Romanesque architecture. It had a basicalla with two towers and narthex a the west and a choir with the tower and chapels at the east. With five aisles like Constantine’s churches in Rome, it was built with superb masonry and was richly carved, painted, and furnished.
